The Butts
Frome, Somerset
The Brief:
To build a contemporary town house on a restricted and awkward plot in Frome. Due to planning concerns, the building was partially sunk into the ground so that it appears single-storey from the front and two-storey from the rear - an underground house, opening onto a courtyard garden.
The Works:
2010/11
The sustainable house is well insulated and constructed from a combination of a lightweight timber frame and the high thermal mass of masonry. Renewable energy is provided by PV panels.
The house was featured with NASBA at ecobuild and was on display at the Bath and South West Homebuilding and Renovating Show.
